There is a version of healing that tells us we should always be moving.
Read another book.
Take another class.
Wake up earlier.
Work harder.
Train longer.
Create more.
And for a while, I believed that healing meant constant motion.
I wanted to become stronger—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. I wanted to learn everything I could. To step outside of my comfort zone. To say yes to opportunities that scared me. To build a life that looked nothing like the one I had survived.
Growth is beautiful.
There is something deeply empowering about realizing you can do things you once thought impossible. Every difficult conversation, every mile run, every painting finished, every page written, every boundary set becomes proof that you are no longer the person your pain tried to convince you you were.
But somewhere along the way, I realized something else.
Growth can become another way of running.
Sometimes we stay busy because stillness is uncomfortable. We fill every hour with goals, projects, and accomplishments because silence gives our thoughts room to catch up. Productivity can become a disguise for avoidance. Achievement can become another form of armor.
There is a difference between growing… and trying to outrun yourself.
I’ve learned that balance isn’t found by doing less or by doing more.
It’s found by listening.
Some seasons ask us to climb mountains.
Others ask us to sit quietly beneath a tree.
Some days require courage.
Others require compassion.
Healing isn’t measured by how exhausted you are at the end of the day. It isn’t earned by pushing until you break.
Real strength knows when to rest.
So I’m learning to give myself permission.
Permission to close the laptop.
Permission to leave the dishes until tomorrow.
Permission to skip a workout when my body needs recovery.
Permission to spend an afternoon reading, painting, watching the birds, or simply doing nothing at all.
Rest is not the opposite of growth.
It is part of growth.
Seeds spend time beneath the soil before anyone sees them bloom.
Wounds knit themselves together in stillness.
Muscles become stronger during recovery.
Our hearts deserve that same grace.
So yes, I will continue to challenge myself.
I will keep learning.
Keep creating.
Keep stepping into rooms that intimidate me.
Keep becoming someone my younger self never imagined she could be.
But I will also protect my peace.
I will leave space in my calendar that doesn’t have to be earned.
I will remember that my worth is not measured by how full my schedule is.
And I will trust that healing happens not only in the moments when we push forward—but also in the quiet moments when we finally allow ourselves to simply be.
May we all find the balance between becoming and being.
Between courage and gentleness.
Between the fire that fuels our growth and the quiet place where our souls are finally allowed to rest.
